About the Initiative
Texas Leadership Conversations is a cross-sector initiative designed to better understand the conditions shaping leadership, organizations, and communities across Texas.
Beginning in North Texas, I am sitting down one-on-one with leaders across sectors to explore three connected layers: what they are seeing across the broader landscape, what is happening within their organizations, and what they themselves are navigating as leaders.
Together, these conversations can help reveal where challenges are shared, where needs are going unmet, what is already working, and where greater alignment, connection, collaboration, or support could create meaningful value.
Real transformation does not begin with a predetermined answer. It comes from understanding the landscape well enough to recognize the questions, needs, and possibilities that are worthy of deeper attention.
“Texas is changing. The world around us is changing. To understand what this moment requires, we must listen to the people living and leading through it.”
— Dr. Chaneé Danielle
Texas Listening Conversations, Founder & Convener
Fun Fact: I took this picture before moving to Texas two years ago! I’m right where I’m meant to be.
Why These Conversations, Why Now?
Texas continues to experience significant growth and change. Shifts in population, workforce needs, affordability, infrastructure, communities, and the economy are creating new opportunities—and new complexity—for the people leading organizations across the state.
Data can tell us a great deal about what is changing.
However, it cannot fully tell us how those changes are being experienced inside organizations, what leaders are encountering as they respond, or what they believe will be required next.
That requires conversation…
And when we listen across sectors rather than within a single industry, something else becomes possible:
Patterns begin to emerge.
A challenge that appears isolated may reveal itself as part of a larger condition. A question being wrestled with in one organization may echo one arising somewhere completely different. An approach working in one sector may offer insight for another.
Texas Leadership Conversations is designed to bring those perspectives into view, understand what connects them, and surface possibilities and opportunities to create more meaningful and sustainable impact.
Three Levels of Conversation
Understanding the landscape means looking beyond any single vantage point.
Each conversation explores three interconnected levels:
Looking across all three allows us to move beyond isolated problems and begin seeing the broader ecosystem in which those problems—and possibilities—exist.
Why Participate?
Your perspective contributes to a larger understanding. The conversation helps you make sense of what you’re navigating.
Step Outside the Noise
Create uninterrupted space to pause, think beyond the next task, and reflect on what you’re navigating.
Make Sense of What You’re Seeing
Explore what’s working, what feels harder than it should, and the patterns or tensions you may not have had time to name.
Help Shape a Larger Understanding
Share what you’re noticing across your organization, sector, or community—and contribute to a broader picture of what leaders are experiencing and what may need to change.
Listening Across the Texas Ecosystem
The inaugural North Texas series is intentionally cross-sector.
As a sociologist, I am trained to look beyond individual organizations to the institutions, systems, and relationships that shape how society functions. Education, healthcare, business, government, faith, workforce, and community life do not operate in isolation. What happens in one inevitably influences—and is influenced by—the others.
That is part of what makes listening across sectors so valuable.
The intention is to bring a meaningful range of experiences and vantage points into conversation—and pay attention to what becomes visible when we consider them together.
Where are leaders encountering similar tensions in seemingly different environments? What conditions are affecting multiple sectors? Where are the points of connection we may miss when we examine each system on its own?
That is where patterns—and possibilities—begin to emerge.
I am seeking perspectives from leaders working across these sectors:
What Are We Exploring?
No two conversations will be exactly the same.
Your work, your organization, your sector, and what you are experiencing will shape where our conversation goes.
Across conversations, I am listening at three interconnected levels: the broader landscape, the organization, and the leader.
And beneath those questions is a larger inquiry:
What becomes visible when we listen across sectors to what leaders are seeing, experiencing, and trying to change?
That is where Texas Leadership Conversations becomes particularly valuable—bringing individual perspectives together to illuminate patterns, connections, needs, and possibilities that may be difficult to see from within any one organization or sector.
I am exploring questions such as:
-
What shifts are leaders noticing in their sectors, communities, workforce, and the broader environment—and how are those shifts affecting their work?
-
What are leaders and organizations trying to move forward, protect, strengthen, or reimagine?
-
Where are leaders seeing momentum, effective practices, new possibilities, or conditions that are helping people and organizations thrive?
-
What is making meaningful impact harder than it should be? Where are leaders seeing disconnects between what organizations value, intend, and actually experience?
-
What are they carrying, questioning, making sense of, or needing as they lead through change?
-
Which challenges, opportunities, or conditions seem to be shared across organizations, sectors, or communities?
-
Where could greater alignment, connection, collaboration, capacity, or a different way of thinking create meaningful movement?
What to
Expect?
What Happens With What We Learn?
Listening should create more than a collection of interesting conversations.
From Conversation
to Possibility
Texas Leadership Conversations is not intended to end when the conversation ends.
As patterns become clearer, I will also be paying attention to where people, ideas, resources, and opportunities may need to be connected.
That could mean introducing leaders whose work intersects. It could mean bringing several voices together around a shared challenge. It could mean developing new thought leadership around an issue that has not received enough attention. Or it could mean identifying an organizational or leadership need that warrants deeper work.
The form will depend on what we learn.
The commitment is to listen first—and let what we learn inform what comes next.
Starting in North Texas. Looking Across Texas.
North Texas is the beginning, not the boundary.
The inaugural series will focus on leaders throughout Dallas–Fort Worth and surrounding communities. Over time, Texas Leadership Conversations is designed to expand into Houston, Austin, San Antonio, and other regions.
Each regional series can help us understand what is distinct about that community while contributing to a larger question:
What are we learning about leadership, alignment, and meaningful impact across Texas?
One state. Many perspectives. A deeper understanding of what meaningful impact requires.
